In the beautiful scenery of the Kashubian forests and lakes, in Chmielno, there is the Museum of Kashubian Pottery. The workshop was founded in 1907 by Franciszek Necel, whose family extended the manufacture.
The Necel family have been making things from Kashubian clay for generations. Originally from Kościerzyna, Franciszek Necel (1869-1935) moved to Chmielno in 1897 and opened a small pottery, combining original Kashubian ceramic design with his own manufacturing techniques. The current workshop, run by Franciszek’s grandson’s nephew, Karol Elas Necel, also features the small Museum of Kashubian Ceramics and a shop. The museum was opened in 1993, and contains a collection of local ceramics as well as a short history of the pottery. The Necel pottery is called “the last Kashubian pottery in the region”.
In the museum you can not only see the very old exhibits but also watch a potter shaping a vessel on a whirling wheel and have a hands-on experience with this fascinating but initially extremely difficult art. In the museum shop they may buy local pottery artifacts adorned in a characteristic way.
Pottery workshop takes about 3 – 4 hours (however time depends on the group size). After workshops we invite you for a dinner in restaurant with local dishes.
