Queen of Polish rivers
The Vistula river is the most important and longest river in Poland, and the longest river reaching the Baltic Sea, 1047 km long. It’s over it shaped the history of Polish. The position of the queen of rivers Wisła owes its size, beauty and role she played. For hundreds of years the Vistula was a trading route. Filled with wood, grain, salt, fur, building stone, amber. It had an important influence on the uprising and development of the Vistula cities – Cracow, Warsaw, Toruń, Gdansk – which today are the pearls of our architecture.
It is now the last of Europe’s rivers, where the landscape is largely a natural landscape, a large river. Variable landscape with extensive views will let you know the nature and architecture of the valley.
The river flows on this stretch of the natural bed, with sand dunes, sandbars and islets. In the valley there are old river beds and small peat bogs. The banks of the banks of the willows and floodplains, cropland and pasture are mosaics, and the places are limited by high slopes. The area is a bird sanctuary of European rank (there are about 180 species of birds).
The area is a very important refuge for migratory and wintering birds. Particularly important are the populations of species such as: white-tailed goose, dugong, ohar, white-tailed tern, river tern, kingfisher, oysters, whitewash. In the relatively high density there is also corncrake, black-capped seagull, river plover. Rich fauna and flora, including the occurrence of endangered and legally endangered species, indicate a very high natural value of this area.
The Vistula in the lower section flows through several major cities, such as: Bydgoszcz, Świecie, Grudziądz, Gniew, Tczew. We start the expedition in the estuary section of Brda to the Vistula Bydgoszcz. It is a great opportunity to see the picturesque Bydgoszcz from the water side before coming to Wisła.Another big city visible from kayak is Grudziadz. On the slope of the river is the Gothic Water Gate, the buildings of the former Bernardine monastery and 25 medieval cereal granaries set in a row next to each other. Together with the Castle Hill and the tower of the church of Sts. Nicholas form a unique panorama of the city from the water’s edge.
Expeditionary trip, with accommodation in tents (both at marinas and without access to infrastructure). Equipment and supplies are with us in kayaks.
The route is ideal for people who have a couple of rafting trips and are in a state of being able to swim about 40 km per day / about 5 hours of swimming with breaks for eating and rest. Vistula flows quite quickly, water level, wind force and direction. Such a distance spread throughout the day swimming with breaks is no problem to do for an active person.
